AUTISM RESEARCH:
A Visual Guide to Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Young Children
Presented by Dr. Patricia Towle

Dr. Patty Towle will report on the progress she has made producing a
training video: A Visual Guide to Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Young Children. One way she has been able to accomplish this is through the generous donations (loans which are copied) of home movies from parents of children with autism and ASD.  Her intent is to use a visual medium, which she has found increases the "learning curve" for professionals compared to written descriptions and symptom checklists. She is also concerned that there is so much variability in symptom presentation among children that further training is needed to alert front-line providers about the core social and communication problems, vs. individual symptoms, which can vary from child to child.

Dr. Patricia Towle has been practicing, teaching, and conducting research in the area of early intervention and developmental disabilities for the last 19 years. Dr. Towle has a wealth of clinical experience with diagnostic valuation of young children, having specialized in those with autism spectrum disorders over the last decade. She has co-authored a handbook, funded by the New York State Department of Health, on best practices in assessment in early childhood, and has taught graduate-level classes on this topic as well as on disabilities in early childhood.

Dr. Towle serves as the Research Coordinator for a federal MCH-supported graduate training program carried out at WIHD. It was in this capacity that she partnered with the county-level Department of Health to initiate the research into how early intervention and preschool charts could be used to track cases of ASD.
