WIHD Video Study needs videos of your child...

Dr. Patty Towle is a psychologist from the Westchester Institute for Human Development who is looking for HOME MOVIES/VIDEOS/DVDS of children who have autism spectrum disorder. She is interested in videos of the children when they were UNDER FIVE YEARS OLD. She wishes to use them to make a training video/DVD that will aid in the early detection of autism and ASD, so that more children will receive early intervention, and at younger ages. Dr. Towle has funding from a Westchester parent-based foundation (the Autism Directory Service) and has lined up a great production company to help her complete this video.  Some details about the use of the home movies are:

She will arrange to pick up and then return the videos to you as quickly as possible.

She will make a digital copy of the footage potentially to be used.
You will sign a consent that you agree to have the edited footage be used in a video that may be distributed by WIHD or a commercial organization.
Your child will not be identified by name.
Since Dr. Towle feels strongly that all children and families should be portrayed in a positive light, she does not portray any child in a negative fashion. She uses only person-first and disability-sensitive language
The video tape is intended to increase the observation skills of professionals training to work in the field of early childhood disabilities, as well as others in a position to refer families for evaluations.

Dr. Towle has had over 20 years of experience in childhood disabilities, most involving autism and ASD. She is a teacher, researcher and clinician,  experienced in the ethics of conducting research and clinical work with families and children.

If you are willing and able to contribute to this project by letting her copy and use footage of your child when he/she was young, please email Dr. Towle or call her. Email: ptowle@wihd.org, Phone: 914-493-8212

Support Groups for Parents

You’ve probably left no stone unturned when it came to finding help for your child … but haven’t done much about finding help for yourself

“This isn’t the child I dreamed of raising “  is a special, six-session support group to help parents cope with raising a child who’s “different,” difficult, intense, eccentric, inflexible, or just not like other kids
.

Groups are led by Barbara Probst, clinical social worker.  In addition to teaching at Fordham University and speaking throughout Westchester about parenting issues,  Barbara has been running these special parent groups since 2000.

Held in Croton on Saturday mornings, groups are limited to six parents whose children are of similar ages with similar concerns.  One or both parents may attend.

Barbara also has a website that includes useful links as well as a monthly feature with practical advice on how to handle those challenging moments.  Have a look at:  www.EccentricChild.com

For information, call 914.271.1266 or email barbprobst@aol.com.

Sheri Perlman, OTR, CSW is offering individual play therapy, bridging the gap between floortime and psychotherapy, in order to work through feelings that lead to maladaptive behaviors that make parenting and learning challenging, and that interfere self esteem and with socializing with other children... Therapy helps children and teenagers symbolize conflict, understand the feelings that drive them to behave in certain ways, thereby reducing and eventually eliminating unhealthy coping skills and replacing them with ego strength and better ways of communicating. The more a person is in touch with their issues, the higher levels of coping one can achieve, which will help to insure optimal functioning in all areas, despite the diagnosis... Therapy, with parent guidance and specific behavioral interventions, is the best way to achieve success in relationships and work, even if that work right now is school.

Therapy is provided in New Rochelle and NYC.
